NEW ADULT ROMANCE

Publication date: 04/27/2015
Kindle Unlimited: No
Cliffhanger: No

I’ll admit something, y’all. I was a little hesitant to read this book. Not because I didn’t like the previous books in the series, but because I liked them too much. I mean, how could any other hero ever stand up to the yummy awesomeness that was Landon Lucas Maxfield, who was, quite possibly, the best book boyfriend who ever, well, boyfriended? After reading Sweet, though, I’m proud to say that my hesitation was unwarranted and that Boyce does a mighty fine job of book boyfriending all on his own.
(Completely off topic: while reading the name “Boyce”, I was occasionally reminded of Boyd from Justified. I really do love me some Boyd from Justified. If you haven’t watched the show, you’ll need to check it out. Boyd was arguably the best anti-hero EVER on television. But I digress…)

There were a ton of things I adored about the book, so I’m just gonna list them out:
  1. Pearl is a STEM heroine, which is wicked hard to find in romance land. I can’t ever read too many romances about super-smart heroines, and Pearl definitely fit the bill.
  2. Pearl was also the daughter of a Mexican immigrant. Diversity is also something I can’t ever read enough of in romance novels.
  3. Even though it was hard for her to disappoint her supportive family, Pearl followed her heart to become a marine biologist instead of a medical doctor. The fact that she knew what she wanted and went after it, even though it made pretty much everything in her life harder, really endeared her to me.
  4. When Pearl’s boyfriend got abusive, she left and cut off all contact with the douchebag. There was no pining or feeling sorry for herself or questioning the decision to leave. Her decisiveness and self-assurance was SUPER refreshing.
  5. Boyce was the best possible kind of book boyfriend. He rose above a terrible upbringing to become a hard-working and genuinely good man. But he was also a realistic character, in that he was flawed and had the same kind of insecurities we all have, which made him relatable (and loveable). He was also simultaneously cute as a button and hot as hell, which isn’t a combo you can find in too many books. (I can’t really think of any other characters like Boyce in romance land, now that I think about it.)
  6. Some reviewers (I’ve noticed) seemed irritated with the number of flashbacks in the book. They didn’t really bother me a bit. Each flashback scene was carefully constructed to give me just enough information about Boyce and Pearl’s history to let me completely understand their motivations as characters. Without those flashbacks, a lot of the things they said and felt and did wouldn’t have made any sense.

Long-story-short, if you, like me, were part of the Landon Lucas Maxfield fanclub, don’t hesitate to read Boyce and Pearl’s story. It’s highly 1-clickable, and you won’t regret it.

Full disclosure: we received a copy of the book from the author, free of charge.

Does this book contribute to or help crush the romance stigma?
Crushes it! This one’s clean and sober. No rehab needed.

Definitely check out the author’s backlist. It’s all great. And for other great new adult book boyfriends, you’ll want to check out this list.
