Romance Rehab now offers romance novel blurb critiques
We’ve talked to a lot of romance authors, and the one thing they all have in common is that they HATE writing blurbs. And when they finally finish the horrible task, many of them aren’t thrilled with the results. Why? Because writing a novel takes an ENTIRELY different writing skill set than writing a blurb, which is basically just a marketing and sales tool designed to sell your book in a few short paragraphs. Just because you’re a great author doesn’t automatically make you a great blurb writer.
So, who do authors usually go to for blurb critique and advice? The wrong folks, in our opinion. Authors, especially indie authors, usually seek out the help of other authors when they’re struggling with their blurbs. And what’s wrong with that?
Glad you asked.
Authors supporting their fellow authors is a beautiful thing, and we’re not trying to say that other authors don’t have valuable feedback to provide. But in most cases, your fellow authors aren’t your target audience. What you really want to know is whether or not a reader would buy your book based on nothing but the blurb. And the readers that all romance authors want to attract the most—the Holy Grail of readers—are the super readers who go through five or more romances a week.
And guess what we are here at Romance Rehab? Yep. We’re super readers. We’re your target audience. If your blurb appeals to us, chances are it’ll appeal to a huge chunk of the romance reading audience. (And that’s a HUGE reading audience, folks. The romance industry is a BILLION dollar a year industry.)
So, just because we’re super readers, what makes us qualified to critique your blurb? Again, glad you asked:
Now you’re totally ready to submit your blurb to us, right? We’re totally connected now, huh? That’s great! But now what?
How does the whole thing work?
The FREE service
For those who chose the free service, we can’t promise to critique EVERY blurb we receive. (Sheer volume and the limited number of hours in a day just won’t allow it, unfortunately) So, we’ll pick up to 5 a month at random, and we’ll post them on the site in our Writer’s Resources section. We’ll try to notify you when your blurb critique is going to run, but we make no promises. (Like we said, we’re busy) It would be best if you’d just visit the site once a week or so to make sure you didn’t miss anything. No timeline can be promised with the free service.
As an added bonus, anyone who submits to the free service and dazzles us with a blurb that is just perfect as is will win a FREE digital ad placement (1 month) on our site. (You will be notified if you win, and specs will be provided at that time.)
The PAID service
For a fee of $10, you can guarantee your critique within 7-business days. Your critique will be emailed directly to you, not posted on the site. (Unless you’d like it to be posted. If so, that can be arranged.) Note: Your $10 fee covers 1 complete blurb critique. If you want feedback on revised drafts, that's great—but you will need to resubmit through the form below and there will be an additional $10 charge per critique. (Make sure to read the "what else do I need to know" section below for more specifics.)
As an added bonus, anyone who submits to the paid service and dazzles us with a blurb that is just perfect as is will win a FREE digital ad placement (1 month) on our site. (You will be notified if you win, and specs will be provided at that time.)
Where do I send my blurb?
For the free service, send your blurb to firstname.lastname@example.org with “Free blurb critique request” in the subject line.
