I'm sadly WAY behind on reviews (as anyone can see by glancing at this site). I've been doing the best I can and mostly don't feel bad about it, but in this case, I dropped the ball TERRIBLY. Because I had an ARC of this delightful little gem sitting on my Kindle FOREVER and I only now got around it reading it. So, apologies to the author and apologies to all of you for taking so long to make this recommendation! Here's my full review: 

Overall opinion:

This is the kind of tightly written, emotionally satisfying, low-angst romantic suspense that many other romantic suspense reads aspire to be when they grow up. The tone hits the sweet spot between heartfelt and tense and never steamrolls the romance by turning into trauma porn. (I freakin' hate trauma porn.) It's, quite frankly, *chef's kiss*.  

Plot overview: 

A hot, rugged Marine veteran who is also a hot, rugged cowboy, protects the widow of one of his fallen comrades and her son while battling his own personal demons--AND while providing A LOT of competence porn (seriously, the guy can fix anything, it would seem).   

What works:  

Jason, the hero, is everything you'd expect from a small-town cowboy. He's steady, grounded, lethal when he needs to be, tender when the moment calls for it, and vulnerable enough to keep him from reading like a walking Stetson stereotype. 

Natalie, the heroine, is never TSTL. She makes good choices under pressure because she HAS to. Single moms (good ones, anyway) don't get a choice in the matter. And when she's with Jason, they're partners, not babysitter and charge. She actively participates in her own protection rather than waiting around to be rescued, and I DIG that about her. 

The romance builds on shared danger, respect, hot attraction, and forced proximity. So, when things turn physical (and emotional), it feels earned instead of instalove-y. 

The pacing is, again, what a lot of romantic suspense tries to do and misses. The story never lags and the tension is constant, but there's still somehow room for quiet, emotional beats. I give the author tons of props for that.      

Tropes you'll find in Cowboy's Last Stand: 

Forced proximity, protector/bodyguard, cowboy (of course), competence porn, "touch her and die", small town vibes, single mom

Who should read this book: 

Since it's too cliche to say "everyone", I'll just say this one will appeal to readers who love romantic suspense reads where the villains aren't cartoon-y mustache twirlers, heroines aren't passive, and heroes are as gentle as they are potentially lethal. Fans of Pamela Clare, Brittany Sahin, and Kaylea Cross should definitely give Jill Sorenson a chance.

I've only recently discovered that dark rom coms (i.e.: romances that combine some dark elements and morally grey characters with lower stakes, hilarious comedy) are a thing. I feel like y'all have been keeping secrets from me because WHERE HAVE THESE BEEN ALL MY LIFE??? Regular dark romance is often a little intense for me, but I'm quickly realizing that dark rom coms are totally my jam. Here are some I've recently read and adored: 

Morelli Family series

A woman mob boss and her unhinged, brutal sister in the role of enforcer, and the men who adore them. So badass, so hilarious, so totally unique. Loved every word.

Yes, they're criminals. Yes, they're sometimes unhinged and a little wack-a-doo. Adorable and endearing and hilarious? Also yes. Can't wait for what might be coming next in this series!

Ruinous Love Trilogy

This series was my introduction to the beautiful world of dark rom coms, and Butcher & Blackbird will remain high on my list of the greatest romances I've ever read because it was SO wildly innovative. It turned my TBR list upside down in the best way possible. I've recommended it more times than I can count and will happily continue to do so until everyone has read it.

Did you ever find yourself watching a Marvel movie and wishing it was, well...hornier? More romantic? And I mean GOOD romance, not whatever it was they were trying to do with Bruce and Natasha? Well, this series has you covered... 
Plot overview: Bryn Terrell is a superhero with a problem: supervillains. Because her powers are somewhat passive in nature, she needs a partner to help her catch the genetically engineered bad guys, but not many other superheroes want to work with her. So, she decides to recruit former bad guy Declan Rhoades, who has become a grumpy recluse lumberjack in his mountain hideaway. One snowstorm and one shared bed later, romance (and hilarity) ensues.  

I've been closed to reviews for a long time now. That doesn't mean I'm reading less. It just means I don't have a lot of time to devote to doing formal reviews. But I always make an exception when a new Isabel Jordan book comes out. (Full disclosure: I started off as a fan, but we're friends now. That doesn't impact my enjoyment of her books in any way, though. If I end up hating any of them, I just won't review.) And this series in particular is one of my all-time favorites. 

First of all, I live for snarky, witty banter, and this book (and it's predecessor, Caped and Dangerous) is LOADED with it. It very much reminds me of the high times of rom com movies, and the classic rom com reads from authors like Jennifer Crusie.   

Bryn is a fantastic heroine (strong, smart, capable, and emotionally mature), but to me, Declan is the star here. There are few things I love more than a grumpy, reclusive hero who absolutely loses his MIND for the heroine. Declan would rip his heart out of his body and hand it to Bryn if she asked, and I DIG that about him.  

And if I'm not mistaken, the spicy times in this book were even spicier than usual. (That is not a complaint, by the way) 

The plot was good (there's a bit with a hidden power of Declan's that I thought was hilarious), but I wasn't in this read for the plot. I was in it for the characters and the fun--and it delivered in a BIG way.

So, if you're looking for a fun, light, hilarious, snarky, witty banter filled romantic comedy that centers women in the superhero arena, then this is the book for you.

I’m going to be brutally honest and say something that might not be super popular.

I most definitely am in this business for the money.

That’s not to say writing isn’t my passion. It is. I’ll be cranking out stories until my great, great, great grandchildren pry my ergonomic keyboard from my cold, dead hands. But publishing…well, publishing is another story entirely. 

Publishing is hard. Time consuming. Sometimes soul crushing and disappointing. If it didn’t help put braces on my kid’s gnarly teeth, groceries in my fridge, and a roof over my family’s head, I wouldn’t do it.

So, it was ultimately the decreasing revenue I was earning in Kindle Unlimited (KU) that prompted me to pull my books from the program a few years ago. 

While KU is great for readers, it’s not always kind to authors. For more background, Romance Rehab did a great article about why so many authors are pulling their books from KU. But the three factors that prompted my decision were:
  1.  Amazon demands exclusivity. If your book is in KU, you can’t publish it (in ebook form) anywhere else. And if your book is found on an illegal pirate site at no fault of your own, Amazon will consider that a breach of their Terms of Service (TOS) and can shut down your account, no questions asked (*gulp*).
  2. Amazon puts the money they earn from KU subscription fees into a giant pot and uses that pot to pay authors each month. They pay authors fractions of a cent for each page of their books read—and those fractions can change each month at Amazon’s discretion. (Exact subscriber numbers are not made publicly available, and Amazon determines what constitutes a page read.) And while they recently raised the KU subscription fee from $9.99/month to $11.99/month, the payout for page reads has actually gone down, not up. 
  3. Big publishing houses are allowed to skirt the KU exclusivity clause whenever they want. Self-publishers and smaller publishing houses aren’t. That kind of hypocrisy doesn’t sit well with me.

But even though I’m not planning to put my books back into the KU program unless some changes are made, I do think subscription-based reading programs can work. I understand we’re living in hard times and the cost of buying every book you want to read can become unaffordable quickly. This is especially true for romance readers, who are typically more voracious than any other genre fiction readers. (Seriously...y'all are amazing.)

Which is why I made all of my books available to Kobo Plus subscribers.

Advantages of Kobo Plus

For readers:
  1. It’s cheaper than KU. For now, the cost in the US is $7.99/month for a Read (eBooks) subscription, or for $9.99, you could get a Read and Listen subscription that allows you access to audiobooks, which easily beats having to buy KU and Audible subscriptions separately. Just as with KU, you can keep up to 20 books at a time in your library.
  2. Superior Ereader support. The app is well designed and easily searchable. For romance readers, their library of available books is pretty extensive, and getting bigger every day.
  3. You can read via the Kobo app on your phone or iPad, so you don’t even need to have a Kobo reader to enjoy the Kobo Plus program (although I highly recommend the Kobo reader. It’s a very high-end reading experience for a very not high-end price.)  There’s also some evidence to suggest that now that Kindles don’t rely on MOBI files, you could download books from the Kobo Plus program (instructions from Kobo for downloading EPUBs here) and read them on your Kindle. (Disclaimer: I haven’t tested that yet, but theoretically, it’s sound. If I’m wrong…bygones.)

For authors:
  1. Kobo Plus does not demand exclusivity. So, an author in the program can publish their ebook anywhere they want and not be in violation of Kobo’s TOS.
  2. Kobo Plus pays authors per minute of material read, which is better than KU’s quickly dwindling “pot” payment method. And in their latest TOS, Kobo announced authors will also be paid if a reader re-reads their work in the program, which is something that KU doesn’t offer.

With all that said, I’m not here to lead some kind of anti-KU revolution. If you’re an author or reader who enjoys the program, use it! You do you. Like I said, these are hard times we’re living in, and since there’s hardly a damn thing worth watching on TV anymore, get your books (legally) wherever you see fit. (Kind of off topic: Don’t forget about libraries, either. They’re awesome, and authors get revenue there, too, because libraries buy their books at a markup.) No judgement here.  I’m just saying that KU isn’t the only game in town anymore, and the more open-minded we all are, the more reading options we’ll have going forward. Because at the end of the day, authors will go where the readers are. When it’s been made clear that readers are enjoying Kobo Plus, more of them will join the program.   

Finally, at the risk of sounding totally self-serving, well-paid authors are happy authors—and happy authors are more willing to keep cranking out the books you love and publishing them for your enjoyment. Just sayin’… 😊

I had never heard of a "dark rom com" until I saw an ad for this book. I read a sample chapter and was sold immediately. This one isn't for the squeamish, but for me, it was utter perfection.

Criminals Need Love Too by Isabel Jordan

I definitely need more romances with morally grey heroines. I mean, you can't swing a dead cat in Romancelandia without hitting at least one morally grey hero. But heroines? They're few and far between. The heroine in this book is FLAWLESS. She's smart, hilarious, snarky, and has a heart of gold hidden under her tough exterior. So, if you're into amazing heroines, ex con heroes, and caper romances, this one's for you. (So, so many laughs)

His Proposal by Angel Rayne

This series and its predecessor, the His Game trilogy, had me in a CHOKEHOLD. At the end of each book, I was simply dying to know what was going to happen, and how the author could possibly fix what was wrong with these couples and get them to happily ever after. She did it, though. And I was hooked on every word. (Note: read trigger warnings. This is a dark romance series. It's one of those series that will make you question things about yourself and your kinks. Don't say you weren't warned.)

I think I've made it clear that I'll read whatever Isabel Jordan writes. Paranormal? Great. Monsters? Sure. Superheroes? Bring em' on. Rock stars? Not usually my thing, but f-yeah, I'll give it a go. So, why was I surprised when I read about two criminals and STILL fell totally in love with them?  
Plot overview: Tenley is a super smart grifter. Knox is a desperate ex con trying to get his hands on his inheritance after getting released from prison. They work together after the most non-conventional meet cute I've ever read to get Knox's life back on track. Hijinks and spicy times ensue, as well as a surprising number of warm, emotional moments. 

Trope bingo: Morally grey heroine, ex-con hero, fake dating, forced proximity, heist romance, grumpy sunshine, only one bed 

There was SO much to love in this book, y'all. It's a hilarious (some of the witty banter between Knox and Tenley made me snort-laugh) heist romance that kind of reminds me of the truly fabulous show White Collar (not in plot, but in vibes). You don't see too many morally grey heroines in Romancelandia, but Tenley as a character makes me wonder why the hell not. This was, honestly, a trope I didn't even know I needed until I read this book. And Knox is my favorite kind of romance hero--hot, grumpy, and ALL about the heroine. This guy would give Tenley a kidney if she needed one and wouldn't think twice about it. Although, who are we kidding? If Tenley needed a kidney, she'd steal one and save herself. But that's not the point. The point is, I loved these characters. They might even be my favorite Isabel Jordan characters of all time. (Which is saying A LOT if you've read any of my other reviews.)

And for those of you who need to know...yes, there are some amazing spicy times. It's not a 5-star spice level, but a SOLID 3.5, which is plenty (in my opinion). 

Plus, there's a scene where Knox is reunited with his dog and it legit brought tears to my eyes. It was a surprisingly heartwarming scene for a rom com. 

So, long-story-short, if you're looking for a witty, spicy, snarky rom com with a unique plot, a non-conventional heroine, a few emotional moments, and a grumpy hero who hits ALL the right notes, this is your next read. It's worth a pre-order, y'all.
