NEW ADULT ROMANCE

Publication date:06/09/2018
Kindle Unlimited: Yes
Cliffhanger: No

For reasons I’d rather not examine too closely, I love a story about a dark, twisty, stalker-y guy who becomes obsessed with someone, then falls in love and learns to become a somewhat normal person. You know, like Sebastian in The Bad Guy. That was a guy who did some effed-up things in the name of “love”, but slowly learned what it really meant to put someone else’s feelings ahead of his own. By the end of that book, Sebastian was prime, grade-A book boyfriend material. But sadly, James, the “hero” in this book, is no Sebastian.

ROMANTIC COMEDY

Note: (formerly titled Most Eligible Bastard)
Publication date: 11/07/2017
Kindle Unlimited: No
Cliffhanger: No

I don’t normally like billionaire romances. There. I’ve said it. I’m sorry if that offends all the Christian Grey fans out there, but I can’t help it. I think there are just entirely too many unrealistically gorgeous, young billionaire heroes in romance land. Let’s face it--real life super rich dudes aren’t usually hot. Like, at all. (Sorry Bezos and Zuckerberg and Gates. It’s nothing personal.) But, while I don’t normally go for billionaire heroes, I DO love an enemies-to-lovers romance, and I DO love Annika Martin. So when I got the BookBub email saying this one was free, I downloaded right away. And if I could figure out who was responsible at BookBub for sending me that email, I would kiss that person right now. (Not with tongue or anything, but still, right on the mouth. I’m that grateful.)

Isabel Jordan Interview

About the author:

The normal:
Isabel Jordan writes because it's the only profession that allows her to express her natural sarcasm and not be fired. She is a paranormal and contemporary romance author. Isabel lives in the U.S. with her husband, 11-year-old son, a neurotic Shepherd mix, and a ginormous Great Dane mix named Jerkface. (Don’t feel sorry for Jerkface. He’s more than earned the name.)

The weird:
Now that the normal stuff is out of the way, here's some weird-but-true facts that would never come up in polite conversation. Isabel Jordan:

Best romance reads for foodies and Top Chef-obsessed book lovers

Best romance reads for foodies and Top Chef-obsessed book lovers
I’m going to tell you a little secret that I’m not exactly proud of. I have the palette of a ten-year-old. I’m the farthest thing from a foodie you’ll ever find. Fancy sauces makes me cringe. I once clawed broccoli off my tongue like it was going to kill me if I swallowed it. (I’m not sure it wouldn’t have, frankly) I love simple comfort food—the kind of stuff your kids eat without complaining. But for some reason, whenever Top Chef is on, I sit and watch every minute of it, even though I have zero idea what those folks are plating, probably wouldn’t eat any of it on a dare, and couldn’t make it if my life depended on it. So, this list, which features protagonists who are chefs and bakers, is for all my fellow romance lovers who also can’t wait to see which chef has to “please pack your knives and go.” (It’s also a great list for foodies, even though I totally don’t understand you people.) Enjoy!

A Merciful Silence by Kendra Elliot

ROMANTIC SUSPENSE

Publication date:06/9/2018
Kindle Unlimited: Yes
Cliffhanger: No

Kendra Elliot is a goddess among romantic suspense authors. There are really only a handful of romantic suspense authors I follow faithfully, but she’s definitely one of them. So, it should come as no surprise that I enjoyed A Merciful Silence.

I’ll start with a warning, though. This is one of those romantic suspense reads that I think fans of straight mysteries and police procedurals would enjoy. It’s heavy on the mystery and suspense elements, light on the romance. What romance there is in the book is well-written (as is to be expected from a Kendra Elliot read), but readers who are looking for romance might find this one to be a bit slow.

NEW ADULT ROMANCE

Publication date: 12/27/2013
Kindle Unlimited: No
Cliffhanger: Kind of

This book earned it’s 4 stars almost entirely because of Logan, the hero, and his brothers. I would’ve read an entire story about nothing but this man and his family. The heroine and the romance were just fringe benefits of reading about Logan. Here’s what I love about Logan:
  • He’s deaf, but his deafness doesn’t really impact his life in a negative way at all. He doesn’t feel sorry for himself, and he does everything he wants to do in life without worrying about his deafness.

ROMANTIC SUSPENSE

Publication date: 05/13/2018
Kindle Unlimited: Yes
Cliffhanger: No

So, you all probably remember that I’m not a huge fan of romantic suspense. I usually enter into romantic suspense reads from new-to-me authors with the same trepidation that I have when I approach new health foods: with a sense of gut-wrenching dread and an expectation of a nasty aftertaste in my mouth. But thankfully, Jessie Scott writes a kick-ass query letter, because if she didn’t, I would’ve skipped reading this book, and overall, I’m glad I gave it a try.

CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

Publication date:07/01/2018
Kindle Unlimited: No
Cliffhanger: No

I’ve always loved Elizabeth Reyes’ books. We Were One is probably my favorite, but Lila and Beast were also pretty freakin’ spectacular. I was very pleased to find that Nine was another satisfying, emotional addition to my Elizabeth Reyes keeper bookshelf.

One thing that Elizabeth Reyes does better than tons of other authors is creating a satisfying, interesting backstory for her characters. I often have a low tolerance for backstory, and when authors get too in depth, I tend to zone out and sometimes skim pages. But I never do that with an Elizabeth Reyes book. Nine was no different. Nine and Drew had complex, rich backstories that let me get to know them as characters and better understand their motivations. It made them more real and relatable, in other words.
