This might be the fastest I’ve ever DNF’d a book in my life. My previous record was 13% of the story. I DNF’d this one at 3%. Here’s why:

At only 3% into the story, I’ve already read very detailed sex scenes between the heroine and a dude who wasn’t the hero, and the hero with a chick who wasn’t the heroine. That would be fine in erotica, but this is romance. Now, I’m not saying I expect the hero and heroine to come into the story all pure and virginal, because I don’t. But I’m not really interested in reading sex scenes between people I know aren’t even the focus of the story.

I LOVED Simon. He was respectful and patient with Charlie, but also alpha enough that he was super sexy. (And who doesn’t love a former fighter pilot? Le sigh. But I digress...)

(And let me tell you executives in the publishing industry something: you guys don’t always know what all readers want. So, when you say that paranormal romance is dead? Yeah...not so much. We can find you thousands upon thousands of romance readers looking for new vampires, shifters, and other supernatural characters to read about.) On a whole, self-published authors are fast, flexible, and fearless—and we respect the hell out of them.

I’m a big fan of Liza Street. She writes smart, funny, sexy fiction that’s short and super easy to read. And y’all know how much I enjoy a nice easy read. It’s comforting, you know? Like super-soft sweats and slouchy socks on a rainy November day. And thankfully, Wild Homecoming was just as comforting a read as the rest of the author’s backlist.

So, I’ve been giving romantic suspense a hard time lately. I even considered turning my back on the category altogether. But this story was a rather nice reminder of why I shouldn’t make hasty decisions about an entire category of books based on a few bad experiences.

Kylee was a heroine I really rooted for. She’s smart and tough, but still sensitive and vulnerable enough to open her heart up to Jayson, even though they have very little in common in the first part of the book.

Let me start this review by saying how much I appreciate my blog partner. Jennifer could’ve been a little irritated with me for running off on my own like a lost 5-year old at Wal-Mart to pick out my second romance novel. But she didn’t shake her head or say “I told you so” even after I released my 2-star review. Nope, she just quietly put that awful experience behind us and patiently presented me with new options for stop #3 on my journey into romance-land. She even gently nudged me towards The Witness, like a mom guiding her toddler away from sharp-edged furniture.

I’m a big fan of Abigail Strom. She writes romances that are a little bit sweet, a little bit funny, a little bit sexy, and a whole lot emotional. Her books are always quick, easy reading that kind of reminds me of comfort food. (You know, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, chicken and dumplings...that kind of thing) Tell Me is no different. It's a friends-to-lovers romance, with a bit of a second-chance romance thrown in mid-book.
