And in my capacity as a grumpy old lady, I get cranky when my favorite authors branch out into other genres or categories of romance. I want them to write what I want them to write, darn it! Is that too much to ask?

This one kind of pains me, because I really like the author. Her book Wild Irish was even on one of our weekly “best of” lists. But this one just wasn’t my cuppa. Here’s why:

Instalove. The hero (Carter) and heroine (Layla) have this instant attraction, but they never get the chance to get to know each other. Circumstances seperate them, and by the time they’re together again, Layla is already pregnant with Carter’s brother’s baby. But Carter immediately steps in and takes care of Layla, falling for her REALLY quickly, even though they’re still basically strangers. It was a little too unrealistic for my liking.

I apparently read a different book than all the reviewers on Goodreads. Because while I remain impressed by the dude on the cover (seriously, sir, job well done), I was less than thrilled with the book itself. I DNF’d at 4%. Here’s why. (Hang with me, folks. This is another one where Imma rant a bit)

Telling instead of showing
The whole first part of the book tells me about how smart and successful the hero is, and about how he runs a company that is doing groundbreaking cancer drug research. His rival (an old friend) is doing shady stuff to compete. All of this is being told to me at great length WHILE THE HERO AND HIS WIFE ARE FLEEING KILLERS!!!!

Full disclosure, The End Zone was originally part of the Team Player anthology that was published last year. But, in this version, there’s an extended epilogue and a glimpse at an upcoming LJ Shen series that are totally worth the price of admission and make this one worth a reread.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. LJ Shen has a superpower. She creates alpha male characters that I would absolutely loathe in the hands of any other author, but in her books, I end up adoring them.
