PARANORMAL ROMANCE

Publication date: 11/29/2016
Kindle Unlimited: No
Cliffhanger: No

I don’t usually read paranormal books about the Fey. In my experience, they tend to be overly complicated, with tons of different species and courts and such. As you all know, I’m a lazy reader and I just don’t have the energy to sort all that complicated crap out. But this book had a great blurb and a cute cover, so I thought, what the hell? I’ll give it a read. And overall, I’m glad I did.

The world-building in this book was intricate and well-thought-out. But yet, it wasn’t so intricate that I had trouble following the story. That’s not an easy accomplishment for an urban fantasy author, so I give the author mad props for that.
Desmoree was an interesting character. She was smart and capable, and certainly didn’t lack confidence, which was refreshing.

But, sadly, my reading experience wasn’t all sunshine, happiness and rainbows. I have a few gripes:
  1. The story opens with Desmoree getting fired from her job. I didn’t see the point of this scene. Was it just to make sure that Des was in the park where the hero could easily find her? I dunno. Seemed like pages were wasted on characters that never got any further page time.
  2. The romance with Jax happened super fast. I mean SUPER fast. These two had barely spoken a few times before they were confessing their undying love.
  3. Des certainly accepted her “destiny” (which involved some crazy-dangerous stuff) easily. She also easily accepted the existence of Fey, and seemed comfortable with flying (sans an airplane) WAY quicker than I would have. It just struck me as slightly unrealistic.
  4. Sexy times were very limited. Sex was of the “closed door” variety. (Not “back door”, but “closed door”. “Back door” would be a TOTALLY different thing, and this wasn’t THAT kind of book.) I myself have no problem with this “fade to black before penetration” type of sex scene, but any romance readers who pick this book up might feel cheated by the lack of detail.
  5. Jax was really interesting. I would’ve liked to see his character developed beyond “hot guy assists heroine in saving the day.”

But, minor gripes notwithstanding, this is a book I’d recommend to urban fantasy readers who enjoy the intricate world of the Fey. The author obviously has a great talent for storytelling, and I expect great things from her as this series continues.

Full disclosure: we received an ARC from the author free of charge.

Does this book contribute to or help crush the romance stigma?
It’s clean and sober. No rehab needed.
