CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

Publication date: 05/02/2014
Kindle Unlimited: No
Cliffhanger: No

My people, it is I, your Queen, the Perpetual Lady of the Unpopular Opinion.

I’m here, once again, to rant all over a book 90% of the romance reading public apparently adored. Again.

Sigh.

It gives me no pleasure to do this. I’ve read J. Daniels books in the past and really liked them. I have no idea what happened with this one. So, here it goes. (*Take deep breath*)

Here’s the odds and ends that almost made me almost DNF at several points:
  1. There are no adult conversations in this entire book. It’s all superficial stuff, sex talk, and misunderstandings. Remove the sex scenes and the unnecessary drama and you’d be left with, oh, maybe 3-5 pages of relevant content. These two characters don’t really know anything about each other, other than preferred sex positions, and when they eventually declare their love, I don’t buy it for even a second. That’s just residual lust you’re feeling, guys. Don’t worry. It’ll pass.
  2. The heroine, Dylan, was a slap-happy twat. Seriously, she was always slapping the crap out of the hero, Reese, for something she “thought” he did. (She was pretty much wrong about what he’d done every time, too. I’m totally against violence against women, but in the case of Dylan, I’d probably make an exception if Reese was inclined to slap her back. She kind of deserved it.)
  3. At one point Dylan and Reese have angry sex and Reese refers to it as “f-cking some sense into” Dylan. That’s just...gross. Ew, ick, and no.
  4. Dylan reminds Reese every damn time she sees him that their relationship is nothing but casual sex, but when he dares repeat the same sentiment, she flounces off in a huff and refuses to speak to him for months. WTF, Dylan? Isn’t that exactly what you WANTED FROM THE START?
  5. I didn’t find Reese’s extreme jealousy to be at all attractive. I mean, she’s not allowed to have a male masseuse or esthetician because Reese has a problem with other dudes touching her? What if her OB/GYN is a dude, Reese? Does she have to fire him, too?
  6. I had NO idea why Dylan was so insistent that she only wanted sex from Reese when she clearly wanted more from him. Pull up your big girl panties and TALK to the man, you dumbass!!
  7. There were a couple of romantic suspense-ish subplots introduced that just kind of fizzled out with absolutely zero resolution whatsoever. Why bother writing crap like that into the story if it’s just going to be dropped and ignored later on?
  8. The whole fun, gay best friend thing has been done to death, and with better results than what ended up in this book, I’m afraid.

I could probably go on, but why? I think I’ve wasted enough of my time on these completely immature, annoying, slap-happy, angsty quarter-wits. I wish them both good luck finding their HEA, but if I’m being honest, I see LOTS of stupid misunderstandings and an ugly divorce in their future.

Does this book contribute to or help crush the romance stigma?
It’s a stigma fest. Blech.

Other reading suggestions
The plot is nothing similar, but the cover reminded me a lot of Sawyer Bennett’s Sugar Daddy, which is a great read. I highly recommend that one instead of this one.
