If you’ve read any of our romance novel reviews, you know that if there’s one thing we hate here at Romance Rehab, it’s weak, spineless heroines. (And also country music, camping, big hairy spiders and reality TV, but we digress...) But fortunately, for every too-stupid-to-live heroine we’ve encountered on our reading adventures, we’ve found at least one outstanding, super-smart, bad-ass woman—the kind of woman who can overcome any obstacle and generally grabs life by the balls and makes it her bitch. The kind of woman who kicks the crap out of the romance stigma. So, without further ado, here are our top 12 favorite bad-ass heroines:
The mystery of Abigail Lowery and her sharp mind, secretive nature and unromantic viewpoint intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and professional level. And while he suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, Gleason is accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, not the powerful and dangerous men who are about to have him in their sights.
And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both
Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she’s way out of her league—but she wouldn’t have it any other way…
Note: Honorable mention to Andrews’s Nevada Baylor series.
I’m here now, money is no object and I have no equal. Except for her. She's disappeared. But don’t worry, I will find her and claim her. She will be mine.
Like I said, don’t be fooled. I am not the devil in disguise... I’m the one standing front and center.
Secrets are being hidden by the club, information is being kept under wraps. Krypt is silent for a reason.
Ash is desperate to know that reason. Continually fighting, Krypt is transferred to a high security prison. Ash is in charge. She's always prepared, always alert. Not even her skills will stop the club from ambushing them and taking back Krypt. Only Ash ends up right in the middle of it. They take her, too. Now she's stuck with a Motorcycle Club who are determined not to let her go. She's too much of a risk. Until the situation can be sorted, they send her and Krypt into the mountains together....alone. The dark, sexy, handsome biker will crawl into her soul and embed himself there. Changing her life forever. An epic, dangerous love will be built on the foundations of darkness.
Amid the tangle of lies, an unexpected thread of truth connecting Ian and Kori comes to light. But with opposing goals, they'll have to choose between love and liberty…
Because with her, it’s not just about sex. Beck opens up to her in ways he never has with other girls. So why does he get the feeling that she’s hiding something? In a world of pleasure and power, the shocking truth could turn them against each other—or bind them forever.
Fair warning: there’s a cliffhanger. It’s worth reading the whole series, though.
Because now that the evil behind the plague knows who Celia is, it’s coming for her and her sisters. This Wird girl has never had it so tough.
Fighting vampires, making immortal enemies, engaging in semi-sadistic interrogation techniques, staging daring rescues…it’s all in a day’s work for this paranormal odd couple. But falling in love? Well…that’s a little trickier. Even for the Semi-Charmed Harper Hall.
Note: Honorable mention to Seven in Semi-Broken. Check out our full 5-star review.
What about y’all? Are you favorites included? If not,let us know! We’d love to hear from you.

What about Elena from Guild Hunters by Nalini Singh! One of my favorite female characters. Not sure why she is not on the list, Guild Hunter and Psy-Changeling are amazing series. However, Guild Hunter has some amazing females :)

Good suggestion, Nicole! I think I liked Honor from Archangel's Blade better, though. She went through so much that my heart ached for her. Thanks for commenting!

Not to mention Elaina from Bitten (Kelley Armstrong's series). Now that is one kick ass female. Also Celia Graves from Cat Adam's Blood Singer series.

I made the mistake of watching the show Bitten that was based on the Armstrong series before reading the books, and on the show, the character of Elaina just irked the crap out of me. So, I probably should've read the books first. My bad...

Anita Blake up to Burnt Offerings, 100% yes. Anita Blake after that? Not so much. Too much emphasis on the sex, not enough on the romance (or ass-kicking) for our liking. (But that's just us) Haven't tried Lilith Saintcrow, but will add to the TBR pile immediately! Thanks so much for commenting!

When we do a Part 2 of the kick-ass heroines list (which I'm thinking we're going to HAVE to), Cat and Jane are FOR SURE on the list. Good call, Mary! Thanks for commenting.

Wow, a lot of my favorite authors are included, Faith Hunter, Jennifer Estep, Patricia Briggs, all badass women and I am sort of surprised to see them on a Romance site, I guess it is the Rehab part of it that matters, lol.

You're right, Susan. A bunch of these books are more urban fantasy than romance. But I think the ones included have at least a strong thread of romance that holds the story together. Kate and Curran's romance, for example, isn't the focus of the story, but it's such an integral part of who they are as characters that I think all romance readers can enjoy the story. That's my story, at least, and I'm sticking to it! So glad you liked the list! And thanks for commenting!

I remember reading book 1 in the series and thinking it was good, but for some reason, I never continued reading the other books. (I was distracted by something shiny, I guess?) Now I'm thinking I need to dive back in and give Rylee another try. Thanks for commenting, Diana!

Thanks for commenting, Kerensa! I had to tap out of the Fever series after that thing (you know the thing I'm talking about) happened to the heroine at the end of book 3. It was all a little too bleak and dark for my liking, without too many hints of romance up until that point. Not that Moning isn't an incredibly author, because she is...that one just wasn't my cuppa tea.

Definitely have to second this nomination! Aelin/Celenea goes through several "romances" before finding her ultimate one, and she's definitely a kick-ass/bad-ass heroine! Even after the events of the final book, she's still a scary lady! Definitely worth consideration on the second list, even if it is YA reading!

This isn't exactly in the same genre as all of the other suggestions, but I just finished the Brayshaw High series by Meagan Brandy. That chick is badass! Literally the first book in the series starts out by some girl calling her a slut and she picks up a lunch tray and breaks it over the other girl's face. I laughed soooo hard thru the whole series! Lots of twists.
