(Warning: Contains spoilers for seasons 1-4 of The 100)
Just to be perfectly clear: I'm a huge fan of this CW post-nuclear-holocaust, dystopian drama and will watch every episode faithfully no matter what. And I understand The 100 is not a romance. Believe me, the writers have made that abundantly clear. But for a show starring young people on the CW, you’d think they’d let at least one happy couple survive, wouldn’t you? Nope. Their track record of breaking the hearts of ‘shippers all over the viewing audience is completely in tact so far. So, with that in mind, here are my picks for the top 7 times The 100 stabbed romance in the heart and let it die, listed in order from merely painful, to “go ahead and kill me” sheer misery:
#7 Abby and Jake
We didn’t get to know Jake very well, seeing as he was already dead by the time Clarke and her band of juvenile delinquents made it to Earth, but eventually it’s made clear that Abby turned her beloved husband over to the authorities and let them “float” him (which is just a nice euphemism for “let him get sucked out of the airlock into space without the benefit of any breathing apparatus) in an attempt to protect the lives of the others on the Ark. We get why she did what she did, but it definitely isn’t an action you could ever call romantic.
#6 Raven and Finn
Raven rebuilt a space pod pretty much from scratch and piloted it to Earth without having any clue whether or not she’d survive the trip in an effort to find her boyfriend, Finn. Against all odds, she survived the trip and found Finn. Too bad that by the time she got there, Finn was already in love with someone else. Ouch.
#5 Maya and Jasper
Poor Jasper. After his unrequited crush on Octavia, viewers thought (for a mere second or two) that he’d actually find happiness with Maya, a girl from Mount Weather who put herself in the line of fire to help him and his friends escape captivity and torture. But in true The 100 form, Maya ends up getting irradiated when Clarke makes a tough executive decision to save her people. Jasper holds Maya as she dies a quick-yet-painful and very blistery death. Yeah...it’s about as romantic as it sounds. Jasper was never the same after Maya’s death, and opts not to even try to survive Praimfaya with his friends at the end of season 4. Good times.
#4 Clarke and Finn
Finn didn’t really do any better with Clarke than he did with Raven, from a romance perspective. He went a little nutty (aka: murderous and rage-y) when Clarke went missing and he took out a small village of Grounders, which kind of upset Grounder leadership. As a result, he was sentenced to death. In a particularly cruel twist, it’s Clarke who ends up killing Finn to spare him hours of torture. Ironically enough, she stabs him in the heart and lets him bleed out. Take that, romance!
#3 Clarke and Lexa
Like Finn, Clarke’s romantic track record kind of sucks. When she fell for Lexa in season 3, I know I started to get a little worried for Lexa’s safety. But up until the time she caught that stray bullet and bled out in Clarke’s arms, Lexa was a perfect romantic partner for Clarke. And God knows she had better chemistry with Clarke than Finn ever did. But as the song goes… “It must’ve been love, but it’s over now…”
#2 Octavia and Lincoln
‘Shippers all around the viewing audience could be heard openly weeping when the golden age of “Linctavia” came to an end. They had a better run than most of the couples on the show, managing to last for 3 full seasons, but that only made their inevitable parting all the more painful. Now, I’m not a crier, so I didn’t cry when Lincoln was shot. But when Octavia, a few episodes later, tearfully tells Indra, “He was my home”...yeah, I might have teared up a little with her. He was our home too, Octavia. Rot in hell, Pike!
#1 Bellarke
I’m going on record right now as a Bellarke shipper. That’s right, ever since Clarke and Bellamy first laid eyes on each other in season 1, I’ve been waiting for this pair of “platonic friends” to admit they’re soul mates. (Yeah, right, platonic my ass. No one looks at their “platonic friend” like Bellamy and Clarke look at each other. But I digress…) The fact that the show has been on the air as long as it has and these two haven’t even shared a KISS yet is a horrible blow to romance fans everywhere. And what’s worse is that at the end of season 4, we learn that after Praimfaya, Bellarke has been separated FOR 6 YEARS! During that time, Clarke has been on the ground, and Bellamy has been in space...with Echo. I have a bad, bad feeling about what might have happened with those two while Bellamy was all lonely and heartbroken, thinking Clarke is dead... (*shivers in fear*) All I can say at this point is that I hope the show runners take pity on us in season 5. How about JUST ONE happy couple, y’all? If not Bellarke, how about John and Emori? Abby and Kane? Give me SOMETHING here, people.
What do you The 100 fans out there think? Let’s discuss.
