CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE
ROMANTIC COMEDY

Publication date: 03/20/2018
Kindle Unlimited: Yes
Cliffhanger: No

Apparently there was some huge publicity around this book’s author, who wrote the story while hanging out at a tire shop, just like Kate, the main character in the book. While it’s a cool story, it had nothing to do with why I decided to read the book. I read the book for 2 reasons:
  1. The hero isn’t a billionaire, playboy, shifter, Navy Seal or rockstar; he’s a mechanic. You don’t get enough sexy mechanics in romance land (in my humble opinion).
  2. The blurb is cute, as is the cover dude (can’t ever go wrong with a hot guy flashing abs and using tools, am I right?)
And overall, I’m glad I gave it a read. Here’s what I loved:
  1. Miles. What a cutie he is. He’s open and honest and hard-working (not to mention good with his hands). Sure, it bugged me a little that he was a bit of a commitment-phobe, courtesy of the requisite-to-romantic-comedy bitchy ex who ruined his youth. But he wasn’t a manwhore and he was honest with Kate about what he was and wasn’t wanting to have with her, so I couldn’t really hold his fears against him. He was a near-perfect book boyfriend.
  2. Unlike a bunch of romantic comedies I’ve read lately, this book was actually very funny in spots.
  3. It’s a low angst read. I REALLY appreciate that. I’m getting too old to appreciate high levels of angst.
  4. Kate’s independence and lack of pretension is refreshing. She’s highly successful in a field where VERY few people ever are and she’s still down-to-earth and very humble.
  5. Sexy times are VERY sexy. Kate and Miles have great chemistry that sizzles through the entire book.

Now, I’m not going to lie and say it was a perfect read. I had a couple of minor quibbles:
  1. Kate kept A LOT of things from Miles for absolutely no reason. If she’d told him the truth early on, he would’ve understood. He never gave her any indication that he wouldn’t, and yet she kept a ridiculous amount of info from him. I hate lies and omissions being used as convenient plot devices.
  2. Dean. Why was it necessary for him to have feelings for Kate? This was in no way a love triangle, so I thought the whole thing was just a waste of pages.
  3. Miles was great, but there’s a fine line between a protective book boyfriend and a jealous, overbearing alphahole, and Miles straddled it a few times. He never totally crossed over to the dark side, but he was REALLY close to it a few times.

But minor quibbles notwithstanding, this was a fun, cute, sexy read that was a welcome addition to my 4-star-read shelf. And let this be a lesson to authors everywhere: write more heroes who have normal jobs!! Some of us are totally over the billionaires/shifters/rockstars/Navy Seals!!!

Does this book contribute to or help crush the romance stigma?
No rehab needed. It’s clean and sober.

Other reading suggestions
I’m going to check out the author’s backlist, and I’d recommend you do the same. And for more reads about heroes who are good with their hands, you’ll want to check out this “best of” list.
